How do you satisfy your sweet tooth without going completely off diet?

The answer to this question definitely depends on whether I am in prep or not! Similar to many competitors during competition prep, I chew LOTS of sugar-free gum! Extra makes sugar-free flavors like Vanilla Cupcake, Rootbeer Float, Sherbet and many more! Many people find that chewing this gum satisfies their cravings. This is not a good solution for me personally as I have found it only makes the craving worse. Instead I chew mint flavored sugar free gum. The mint calms and focuses me. It also seems to affect my palette in a way that removes the desire for sweet foods mostly because I know they will taste awful after the mint flavor!! (much like brushing your teeth)

Regardless of my season I am always on a structured nutrition plan, but if I am in my off season there are more options! If it is Open Diet Day Sunday then I will eat the sweet food I am craving! If it is Monday and I am craving something sweet then I will wait until Tuesday evening or even better Wednesday to indulge.

Additionally, I will purchase a single serving of the food I’m craving. Instead of baking a batch of brownies, I will purchase one. This prevents me from eating the entire pan in a day. Instead my mind is satisfied because I can see that I have eaten all that is available to me and I don’t need to long for “just one more bite” or “there is only a little bit left, I will just finish it”. It is important to remember that ALL foods can have a place in your life; you just need to remain accountable to their placement as well as your choices the other 98% of your time.

  1. I am on a low carb eating plan and have been for a year.. So if sway from eating something I shouldn’t I love to endulge in a hand full of berries and my sin is coffee cakes..I have only lost 22 pounds.
